M. P. Saminathan Biography

M. P. Saminathan (birth name Muthur Perumal Gounder Saminathan) was born in Erode, with his hometown in Muthur, Tiruppur District, Tamil Nadu. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at PSG College of Arts & Science, Coimbatore, before entering politics.

He began his political career at a relatively young age and achieved his first significant electoral victory in 1996 when he won the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election for the Vellakoil constituency by defeating a former minister. This victory began his extensive time in the Indian legislative system.

Saminathan achieved his next success by winning two consecutive elections from Vellakoil in 2001 and 2006, which established him as a trustworthy public servant for his community. He worked as Minister for Highways and Minor Ports in the Tamil Nadu government from 2006 to 2011, where he handled infrastructure projects and developed transportation regulations.

He ran for election in 2011 and 2016 from other constituencies after Vellakoil stopped existing as a voting district before the 2011 elections. His 2021 political return resulted in a Kangayam constituency victory, which led to his appointment as Minister for Information and Publicity in the DMK-led government.

Saminathan has held major leadership positions in the DMK organization, which included his work as Youth Wing Secretary from 2017 to 2019. He works as both a lawmaker and a minister who handles state communication duties while he maintains his current position.
