T. R. B. Rajaa was born on 12 July 1976 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, into a political family; he is the son of senior DMK leader and former Union minister T. R. Baalu and Renuka Devi. He completed his schooling and higher education in Tamil Nadu and later pursued postgraduate studies, including a Master’s in psychology, and has also earned a doctoral qualification in counselling psychology and management.
Rajaa began his political career with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party by winning his first election in 2011 from the Mannargudi Assembly constituency. He won the same seat through the 2016 and 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections, which proved that he maintained continual support from his constituents.
Rajaa has held important positions in the DMK party organization which include his current role as Secretary of the DMK IT Wing that began in January 2022 and his previous position as NRI wing secretary. His organisational work has been noted alongside his legislative responsibilities.
He took the oath of office for Minister of Industries Investment Promotions and Commerce on May 11 2023, in the Tamil Nadu Government, which operates under Chief Minister M K Stalin, to lead state initiatives for industrial development and investment growth.
During 2024 and 2025, he continued to lead Tamil Nadu’s industries and investment agenda. The state demonstrated effective project implementation, which resulted in a high percentage of signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) becoming actualised projects throughout various sectors. He pointed out that Tamil Nadu maintained its position as the highest patent-filing state in India during the 2024–25 period, which demonstrated increasing innovation activity within his area of responsibility.
In 2025, Tamil Nadu attracted major investments, which reached more than ₹2.07 lakh crore and created new jobs through its development of industrial parks and projects located outside urban areas. The ministry of Rajaa focused on developing industrial operations and new business opportunities throughout the entire region during this timeframe.
He maintains his position as Mannargudi MLA while serving as Minister for Industries Investment Promotions and Commerce in the Tamil Nadu Government until 2026.
