Thiru Durai Murugan, was born on 1 July 1938 in Gudiyatham, Vellore District, Tamil Nadu, is the son of Duraisamy and Thavasi Ammal. Being an advocate, he has M.A. and B.L. degrees and then after that, he entered into full-time politics.
Initially, he got elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1971 and thereafter had the privilege of getting re-elected ten times, thus becoming one of the longest-serving legislators in the history of the state assembly. His winning elections consistently has been proving his immense grassroots support and organisational strength.
Over the years, Murugan occupied important ministerial posts in DMK governments, Public Works and Law being the most significant ones in the earlier administrations. After the DMK win in elections 2021 he was given the responsibility of Minister for Water Resources (Irrigation projects), legislative affairs, and related departments.
In May 2025, the cabinet led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin decided to give him the Law portfolio besides his current duties thus confirming his status as a senior cabinet minister with wide governance capabilities.
Besides ministerial responsibilities, since 2020 he has been the General Secretary of the DMK and is viewed as a trusted friend of both M. Karunanidhi and M. K. Stalin. His son, Kathir Anand is a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Vellore that keeps the political profile of the family alive.
On the contrary, Murugan has also been in the limelight due to a legal case - the case of disproportionate assets that was associated with his time as Public Works Minister was reopened in 2025 when the Madras High Court ordered framing charges against him.
Durai Murugan is still a senior DMK leader and cabinet minister, and he is going to keep playing active roles in state governance, legislative affairs, and party organization in 2025.
