PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan

P. T. R. Palanivel Thiagarajan was born on 7 March 1966 in Chokkikulam, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, into a family with a long political legacy; his father was veteran DMK leader P.T.R. Palanivel Rajan, and his grandfather P.T. Rajan was a Chief Minister in the pre-independence Madras Presidency. He completed schooling at The Lawrence School, Lovedale, and Vikaasa School, Madurai.

Thiagarajan pursued a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, followed by an MS and Ph.D. in Human Factors Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and an MBA in Financial Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management, blending technical and economic expertise.

Before entering electoral politics, PTR had a long career in international finance, working with major institutions like Lehman Brothers and Standard Chartered Bank, where he rose to senior leadership roles in financial markets and capital allocation.

He entered politics with the DMK and contested his first legislative election in 2016, winning the Madurai Central Assembly constituency. He was re-elected in 2021, after which he was appointed Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management in the Tamil Nadu government and later became Minister for Information Technology & Digital Services, leading policy direction in digital governance.

As of 2026, PTR continues in these roles, leveraging his economic and technical background to influence state policy.
