R. Sakkarapani

R. Sakkarapani was born in Kaaliyappagoundanpatti village near Kallimandayam in Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu. His initial years and his work in local politics enabled him to create a strong foundation for the electoral races in the Oddanchatram constituency.

He first won the Oddanchatram seat in 1996 as a DMK candidate and established his political power through five consecutive victories, which he achieved during the elections of 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021. He became one of the few legislators in the state who achieved six consecutive victories.

Sakkarapani worked as Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Chief Government Whip from 2006 until 2011, which proved his ability to control House operations during his extensive time in office. He also held the position of DMK Whip in later assemblies.

The DMK government of Tamil Nadu appointed him as Minister for Food and Civil Supplies after the 2021 Assembly elections. He manages public distribution systems, agricultural purchasing activities, and food security welfare programs through his current responsibilities.

R. Sakkarapani has been serving as the Oddanchatram representative of Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly since 2026, while he also holds his position in the state cabinet. His decades-long service reflects both legislative continuity and executive experience.
