Kanimozhi Karunanidhi
Kanimozhi Karunanidhi is a politician, poet, journalist, and a prominent DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) leader in India. She has been a Member of Parliament in both Houses of the Indian Parliament, namely the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha, many times, and while doing so, she has represented Tamil Nadu and later Thoothukkudi.

She is known for her exceptional social justice, cultural policy, and parliamentary committee leadership contributions, and apart from that, she is also active in women's and cultural causes and holds leadership positions in the DMK party.

Kanimozhi Karunanidhi Biography

Kanimozhi Karunanidhi was born on the 5th of January, 1968, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a political family of great repute; she is the daughter of the late M. Karunanidhi, who was a Chief Minister and Rajathi Ammal. She earned a master’s degree in economics and got into journalism as her first career, and in the meantime, entered the political world by working with the best publications and media companies.

Her writing habits gradually became one of the factors that shaped her public character, and she was already recognized for her poetry alongside her participation in culture. Kanimozhi has just been elected President of The Hindu National Press Employees’ Union, her election to that position being the first for a woman.

National politics was entered by Kanimozhi in 2007, when the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu was won by her through a DMK ticket. In 2013, she was re-elected to the Upper House, and she was a chief whip for the party as well as the key parliamentary strategist. Kanimozhi was also a member of the standing committees and took part in the debates going on in the Rajya Sabha while serving there.

She became a member of the Lok Sabha in 2019, won the Thoothukkudi seat, and was the first lady MP from that constituency. She also acted as Deputy Leader of DMK in Lok Sabha, as well as chaired the important parliamentary committees on Chemicals and Fertilisers, Rural Development, and Panchayati Raj. In 2022, she was made DMK’s Deputy General Secretary, a post reflecting her pivotal role in the party’s leadership hierarchy.

Kanimozhi in 2024 was again elected from Thoothukkudi constituency, and she not only continued her parliamentary work but also the leadership role of DMK parliamentary party leader, along with her other responsibilities.

Kanimozhi organized Job Fairs in various districts of Tamil Nadu which began as an experiment in June 2008 at Kariyapatti, a village in Virudhunagar District; by March 2010, in a span of two years, the experiment spread across various villages like wildfire and provided jobs to over one lakh unemployed youth spread across five districts, namely Nagercoil, Vellore, Udhagamandalam, Tiruchirapalli and Virudhunagar; She plans to conduct similar job fairs all over Tamil Nadu.
