Ma. Subramanian (born 1 June 1959) is an Indian lawyer and politician of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) serving as Minister for Health and Family Welfare in the Government of Tamil Nadu since 7 May 2021. He is an MLA from the Saidapet constituency, elected in 2016 and 2021.

As of March 2026, he is contesting the Tamil Nadu Assembly election from the Saidapet constituency, continuing his active engagement in state politics and public affairs.

Ma. Subramanian Biography

Ma. Subramanian was born on 1 June 1959 in Vaniyambadi, Tamil Nadu, India. He completed his schooling at Saidapet Government Model Higher Secondary School and earned his bachelor’s degree through an Open University programme. He later studied LLB at Havanur College of Law in Bangalore and became a practising advocate.

He joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in 1976, rising through the party’s youth and organisational ranks. Between 1996 and 2006, he served as Chairman of the Chennai Corporation and was later elected Mayor of Chennai (2006–2011), where he was involved in several urban civic initiatives.

Subramanian transitioned to state electoral politics and was first elected as MLA from the Saidapet Assembly constituency in 2016, defeating the incumbent. He retained the seat in 2021, establishing a strong local mandate in a key Chennai constituency.

Following the DMK’s victory in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, he was appointed Minister for Health and Family Welfare, where he has overseen health policy, medical education and family welfare programmes for the state.

As of 2026, he continues to lead the health ministry, including initiatives related to public health awareness and healthcare access.
