Haribhushan Thakur Bachaul was born on 30 January 1969 in Bisfi, Madhubani, Bihar. He grew up in a farming family, with his father being Late Mahendra Thakur. He identifies as an agriculturist, maintaining strong ties to his rural origins.
His political journey began when he was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Bisfi seat as an Independent candidate in 2005. During his first term from 2005 to 2010, he focused on addressing issues related to farming, roads, and flood management in his constituency.
In the 2010 Bihar Assembly elections, he contested on a Janata Dal (United) ticket but was defeated by Dr. Faiyaz Ahmad of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). He again contested as an Independent in 2015, securing the third position. Haribhushan Thakur Bachaul joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and successfully won the Bisfi Assembly seat in the 2020 Bihar elections, defeating RJD's Faiyaz Ahmad by a margin of 10,282 votes. He assumed office on 16 November 2020.
Throughout his political career, Thakur has been known for making controversial remarks. These include comments in February 2022 suggesting that Muslims should be deprived of their voting rights, and more recently, appeals to Muslims to 'stay indoors' on Holi in March 2025, which coincided with a Friday during Ramazan. He has also made statements regarding the veil worn by Khan Sir's wife, linking it to 'Islamic thought'.
In September 2021, he also gained attention for worshipping a photo of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, depicting him in the form of Vishwakarma.
In November 2025, Haribhushan Thakur Bachaul ran for the Bisfi Assembly seat on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket but failed to secure a victory.
