N Biren Singh is also a former Footballer and Journalist. He began his career as a footballer, got recruited to the Border Security Force (BSF) and played for its team in domestic competitions. He resigned from the BSF and turned to journalism. He began a vernacular daily Naharolgi Thoudang in 1992 and worked as its editor till 2001. He turned to politics in 2002 and joined the Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party winning assembly election from Heingang Assembly Constituency. He retained the seat in 2007. He continued to serve the state in the capacity of a Cabinet Minister till February 2012. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2016. In 2017, he retained his seat from Heingang Assembly Constituency again and was named the 12th Chief Minister of Manipur. He won the floor test in the floor of the Assembly with the support of 33 MLAs of BJP and its allies.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh will not step down from the prestigious position as supporters tore up his resignation letter. Pior to that, Singh conducted a meeting with cabinet ministers at his residence, where he declared to quit due to his alleged failure to solve the ongoing Manipur violence.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh met with the Union Minister Amit Shah to brief about the evolving situation on the ground. The CM also informed the same through his verified twitter handle, it read, "Called on Hon'ble Union Home Minister, Shri @AmitShah Ji in New Delhi today and briefed about the evolving situation on the ground in Manipur." He also added, "Under Amit Shah Ji's close supervision, the State and Central Govt have been able to control the violence to a great extent in the past week. It may be noted that there has been no report of casualties due to the violence since the 13th of June."
