Babulal Marandi was born on 11 January 1958 in Koderma district (now Giridih region), Jharkhand. He came from a tribal Santhal background and rose through grassroots activism, student engagement, and organisational politics before entering mainstream public life.
He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and became one of the party’s earliest prominent tribal leaders in the undivided Bihar region. During the 1990s, he emerged as a key face of the Jharkhand statehood movement and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kodarma.
When Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in November 2000, he was chosen as the first Chief Minister of Jharkhand. He served from 2000 to 2003, overseeing the formative years of the new state and laying its early administrative framework.
After leaving the chief ministership, he continued in national and state politics. In 2006, he resigned from the BJP and later founded the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) in 2006, positioning himself as an alternative political force in the state.
He served multiple terms as Member of Parliament and remained a strong opposition voice in Jharkhand politics. In 2020, he returned to the BJP, marking a major political realignment. He later became Leader of Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly and continued as one of the state’s senior-most political leaders.
As of 2026, he continues to be active in Jharkhand politics, maintaining his influence while actively engaging in legislative responsibilities, party strategy, constituency affairs, and broader public issues.
