Vinod Khanna Biography

Vinod‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Khanna was brought up in Peshawar, where he was born on 6 October 1946 to Kishanchand Khanna and Kamla Khanna. After the partition, the family relocated to Mumbai, and he finished his studies in St Xavier’s High School and then did his graduation from Sydenham College. The business studies might have been his area of work had not the introduction to theatre and cinema totally changed his life, and he finally opted for a career in acting.

His career in films started in the late sixties, and within a short period of time, he was able to make an impression with his powerful performances in both kinds of roles, supporting as well as lead characters. Vinod Khanna, in the seventies and eighties, was one of the most talked-about stars in Hindi movies and is still remembered for his versatility and stunning charm on screen. While still enjoying success, he left to seek spiritual solace, but after a period of time, he came back to films with renewed vigour and triumph.

In the late 1990s, Vinod Khanna joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, marking the beginning of his political career. The public love and affection that he enjoyed made it easy for him to get elected from Punjab, and in no time, he was one of the most prominent faces of the party at the national level. His work as an MP from Gurdaspur revolved around enhancing infrastructure, connectivity, welfare programmes and promoting cultural activities. He was highly respected by his peers in other parties for the work he did.

He was entrusted with major ministerial offices such as that of the Minister of State for External Affairs and subsequently Minister of State with independent charge for Culture and Tourism. In his political journey, he wisely mixed public service with rare appearances in films, thus keeping a close link with both cinema and politics. Even when he was aged and unwell, he did not stop working for his constituency until reduced to his last days.

Khanna died on 27 April 2017, and apart from the long-lasting imprint he made as an actor of great merit, his memory will always be cherished by those whom he served as a devoted public servant and national ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌figure.
