T. P. Ramakrishnan was born on June 15, 1950, in the Kozhikode district of Kerala. He began his political journey through student movements and later became associated with the Communist movement, eventually joining the Communist Party of India (Marxist).

He rose through the ranks of the party by actively participating in organizational and grassroots political activities, establishing himself as a key leader within the party structure in Kerala.

Ramakrishnan entered electoral politics and represented the Perambra constituency in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. He became known for his focus on labour issues, welfare schemes, and development-oriented policies.

He served as Minister for Excise and Labour from 2016 to 2021 in the Pinarayi Vijayan government, where he introduced welfare initiatives and labour protection measures.

Ramakrishnan's ministry gets appreciation for this scheme. under his ministry, Kerala government announced vimukthi mission, which aims to create awareness among the youth against substance abuse. this scheme also a big success in Kerala.
