A. K. Saseendran was born on 29 January 1946 in Kannur district, Kerala, to A. Kunhambu and M. K. Janaki. He completed a D.A.M. course and has been active in politics since his student days. Early in life, he entered political work through the Kerala Students Union (KSU), progressing through leadership roles including district president and general secretary within student and youth bodies.
Saseendran’s career spans several decades, during which he held organisational positions within the Nationalist Congress Party and its predecessor formations. He first entered the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1980 and subsequently won elections from various constituencies including Peringalam, Edakkad, Balussery, and Elathur, demonstrating enduring electoral relevance in state politics.
In the Kerala government, Saseendran has held ministerial portfolios including Transport (2016–2017; 2018–2021) before being appointed in May 2021 as Minister for Forests and Wildlife Protection. In this role, he has overseen conservation initiatives, forest management and policies aimed at sustainable coexistence between communities and wildlife.
Saseendran has also been part of political challenges and resilience; in 2017, he resigned as Transport Minister following an allegation aired on television and later returned to ministerial office after the matter evolved.
As of 2026, he continues his work in the Kerala cabinet and legislative assembly with a focus on environmental and cooperative sector priorities.
