Md. Salim, a long-time senior CPI(M) leader from West Bengal, started his political journey through student activism. During his college days, he became a member of the Students’ Federation of India and later got associated with the Democratic Youth Federation of India. These experiences not only helped him to understand the ideology deeply but also provided him with organisational skills. He didn’t wait long and was elevated to various positions of responsibility within the left movement, which allowed him not only to make decisions but also to develop his leadership skills.
After a long commitment to his party at the grassroots level, he moved to the parliament. Md. Salim has been a member of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha representing West Bengal. He earned his reputation by the keen and precise manner of his speeches. He was always for secular ideals and a persistent supporter of labour rights issues of minorities and social justice. He was involved in a range of activities in parliament besides the debates, which included membership in various committees.
He still maintains the charge of a major leader within the CPI(M) and can be credited with being a major force behind the party’s various election campaigns and strategies in the state. His elevation to the position of Secretary of the CPI(M) West Bengal State Committee not only expanded his leadership horizon but also marked his coming to the centre of the party's efforts to revive the ground-level organization in West Bengal. i.e., at the panchayat and block levels. He keeps on adding to his repertoire. In addition, he is recognized as a seasoned politician and continues to play a vital role in the ongoing struggle of the left.
