Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia Biography

Born in 4 July 1951, in Asansol district of West Bengal, Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia, is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Prior to entering in politics, he was a successful lawyer. He did his primary education from St.Josephs School in Asansol and Graduated from Bidhan Chandra College, Asansol. He completed his Law Degree from Calcutta University Law College, University Campus. He is also the National Vice President of the BJP. He tied the knot with Monica Bannerjee, and the couple has 2 daughters and 3 sons. Ahluwalia is the member of Parliament of India representing Darjeeling Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal in the 16th Lok Sabha. However, from 1986-1992, 1992-1998, 2000–2006, and 2006-2012, he was a Member of Parliament representing Bihar and Jharkhand in the Rajya Sabha. He was earlier a member of the Indian National Congress. In the year 1986, he got elected into the Parliament as an MP from Bihar. During his political career, he has held the posts of Minister for Urban Development, and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in the Union Government headed by P. V. Narasimha Rao. Till 2012, he was also the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, when he lost his Rajya Sabha seat in the Jharkhand Rajya Sabha elections. Following his defeat in the Rajya Sabha elections, he entered the Lok Sabha, winning the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections from Darjeeling. Currently, Ahluwalia is at present a Member of the National Executive Committee of the BJP.

Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia Achievements

He was a Member of the G.S. Dhillon Committee constituted by Government of India for providing relief and rehabilitation to the victims of the November 1984 riots in the country. He served as elected President in the Management Board of the Gurudwara Takht Shri Harimandirji, Patna Sahib, in consecutive terms from 1994-2001 and as a nominee of Parliament in the Board of Management of Gurudwara Sachkhand Shri Hazur Apchalnagar Sahib, Nanded (Maharashtra) from 1998-2000. He had visited U.K., to address Peace Rally in 1986. In 1989, he went to Geneva (Switzerland) to participate as alternate leader of the Indian delegation to the Conference of United Nations Human Rights Commission. In 1997, he visited Mauritius as a member of the Indian Parliamentary delegation to attend the 43rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference. As member of the delegation to Parliament of European Union (E.U.), he visited Brussels (Belgium) in January, 2002, to apprise the E.U. of the terrorist attack on Indian Parliament on 13 December 2001. He attended General Assembly session of the United Nations in October, 2002 and addressed issues including "Social Development". He led the Indian delegation to the Inaugural Assembly of the International Parliamentarians` Association for Information Technology (IPAIT) held from 23-26, July 2002 in Seoul (Republic of Korea) where he addressed about the concern regarding the "Growing Digital Divide". In Windhoek (Namibia) he led the Indian delegation to the 48th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference inaugurated on 31 August 2002. He also attended the 109th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Geneva (Switzerland) from 1-3, October 2003 and served as Rapporteur on the "Role of Parliaments in Assisting Multilateral Organisations in ensuring peace and security in building an international coalition for peace". Ahluwalia visited Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania from 5-13, June 2003, as a member of the Goodwill Delegation from Indian Parliament led by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Government of India.
