Sunetra Ajit Pawar was born on 18 October 1963 in Maharashtra into a politically connected family. She is the sister of senior leader Padamsinh Bajirao Patil, linking her to established regional politics. Despite this background, she remained largely away from electoral politics for many years. Her early public life was limited compared to other members of her extended political family.
After marrying Ajit Pawar in 1985, she became part of the influential Pawar political family led by Sharad Pawar. During this period, she focused on family responsibilities and agricultural and cooperative sector interests. She was also involved in local social initiatives, particularly in community welfare. However, she stayed away from active electoral contests for decades.
Her formal political entry came in 2024 when she contested the Lok Sabha elections from Baramati. The election was high-profile due to its association with the Pawar family stronghold. She lost the election to Supriya Sule but gained significant political visibility. Soon after, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, marking her entry into parliamentary politics.
A major turning point came in early 2026 following the demise of Ajit Pawar. This created a leadership vacuum within the party’s structure in Maharashtra. In response, she was elevated to a key leadership role and sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. Her appointment marked a rapid transition from a new entrant to a senior leader.
She was subsequently elected as the national president of the Nationalist Congress Party, becoming the first woman to lead the party. Her leadership signalled continuity within the Pawar political legacy while also marking a shift in party dynamics.
As of 2026, she is actively contesting the Baramati by-election as a representative of the Nationalist Congress Party.
