Sunil Dattatray Tatkare was born on 10 July 1955 in Sutarwadi, Kolad, Raigad district, Maharashtra, to Dattatray Tatkare and Geeta Tatkare. He finished his initial schooling at Sutarwadi, and then he studied science at Fergusson College in Pune before continuing his education at J.S.M. College in Alibag. He worked as a government road contractor before beginning his political career.
Tatkare began his political career in the 1980s and joined the Indian National Congress in 1984. He entered the state legislature as an MLA from Shrivardhan constituency in Raigad during the 1995 elections, which marked the start of his extensive political career. Over his career, he held multiple ministerial positions within the Maharashtra government, where he worked as Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, Energy Minister, Finance and Planning Minister, and Water Resources Minister, which demonstrated his extensive administrative background.
Tatkare joined the Nationalist Congress Party after its establishment as a separate party from Congress during the late 1990s, which helped him build his regional political authority. He received his State President position, which represents the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) in Maharashtra, because of his leadership expertise and his responsibilities inside the political party.
Tatkare won the Raigad Lok Sabha parliamentary seat in 2019, and he successfully defended his position in 2024 with a bigger victory, which demonstrates his strong voting base in the Konkan area.
Tatkare expressed his approval of UNESCO's World Heritage List designation for twelve forts connected to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj during July 2025 while explaining how government assistance and parliamentary efforts contributed to the successful listing process.
As of 2026, Sunil Tatkare continues to serve as the Lok Sabha MP for Raigad and as the State President of the Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra, engaging in both electoral organisation and legislative work.
