Dr. Jitendra Awhad was born on August 5, 1963, to Satish Bhaurao Awhad and Lilavati in Nashik, Maharashtra. From a young age, he showed a strong commitment to social causes. Dr. Awhad considers Sharad Pawar as his mentor.
In his early political career, Dr. Awhad held significant positions such as Chief Secretary and General Secretary of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) in Maharashtra, and President of the Akhil Bhartiya Vanjara Youth Association. He also serves as District President of NCP Thane.
Currently, Dr. Jitendra Awhad is a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Maharashtra, representing the Mumbra-Kalwa constituency as a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). He has served as the MLA for the Mumbra-Kalwa constituency for three consecutive terms.
Dr. Awhad has also held important cabinet positions in the Maharashtra government, including Minister of Medical Education and Horticulture, Housing, and Minority Affairs.
In 2014, while serving as the Minister of Horticulture, Dr. Jitendra Awhad convinced Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan to become the face of the state's horticulture initiative. The goal was to support farmers, promote their produce, and ensure quality for consumers.
Dr. Awhad also started the "Coffee with Students" program to address issues faced by medical students in cities like Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Aurangabad, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Dhule, and Solapur.
Through his NGO, Sangharsh, he worked to organise and revitalise the Janmastami or 'Dahi Handi' festival. This event attracts thousands of participants each year, including youth from Thane, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai, who form human pyramids to compete for substantial prizes.
He encourages people in his constituency to participate in cultural activities and is an avid music enthusiast.
On a personal note, Dr. Awhad is married to Ruta Awhad, and they have one daughter. His net worth is Rs 47,89,36,553.
