He got into politics in 2010 by winning the Baisi Assembly seat as a BJP candidate. He switched to Janata Dal (United) in 2014 and got elected as the Member of Parliament of Purnia, where he remained till 2024. In March 2023, he was made National General Secretary of JD(U). In the 2024 general elections, he lost to Pappu Yadav when he tried to secure the seat as NDA candidate.

Santosh Kumar Kushwaha was born on February 5, 1976, in Kocheili village, Purnia district, Bihar. After finishing his primary education locally, he briefly moved to Bihar to pursue his higher studies. Public data on his college degrees is quite sparse. Still, it is not unclear that his studies formed the base for his political career in the area. Kushwaha entered the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 2010 as a BJP candidate with a win at the Baisi constituency. Then in 2014, he switched to the JD(U) and became MP of Purnia Lok Sabha constituency. He served from 2014 to 2024. During his tenure, he energetically directed his efforts towards the development of the areas where he worked and focused on the up-gradation of infrastructure, education, and conducted various welfare programs for the community. Kushwaha was a Member of Parliament who was always actively present among the masses.
