Muniyan Selvaraj was born to K. Muniyan and M. Kunjamal in Kappaludaiyan on 16th March 1957. He married Kamalavathanam in 1984 and was blessed with two daughters with her.
He has had a notable political career marked by successive terms in the Lok Sabha. He was elected to the 8th Lok Sabha in 1984, followed by re-elections to the 11th and 12th Lok Sabha in 1996 and 1998 respectively, indicating a strong mandate from his constituency. In May 2019, he secured his fourth term by being re-elected to the 17th Lok Sabha.
Since September 13, 2019, Selvaraj has served as a member of the Standing Committee on Chemicals & Fertilisers and the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Beyond politics, Selvaraj is actively engaged in various social and cultural initiatives. He vehemently opposes communal and caste-based atrocities, advocating for rural development by facilitating land allocation to the rural poor and promoting health awareness. Additionally, he focuses on combating illiteracy and educating farmers on modern agricultural techniques.
Selvaraj's special interests lie in environmental conservation, particularly through tree cultivation for roadside planting and establishing community nurseries. He emphasizes the distribution of trees like coconut and teakwood to households, underscoring the significance of nurturing nursery gardens.
In his leisure time, Selvaraj enjoys activities such as reading newspapers and novels, writing letters, and watching television news. He also finds pleasure in interacting with children, visiting agricultural lands, and organizing meetings to raise awareness among rural communities.
An avid sports enthusiast, Selvaraj takes an interest in watching cricket and has a personal affinity for playing Kabaddi. He actively participated in Kabaddi tournaments during his student years.
Moreover, Selvaraj has undertaken significant endeavours like participating in the CHATHA, a 150 km walk from Karikal to Jhanjavari, advocating for the GAGA-CAVERY river project. He believes in its potential to significantly enhance drinking water availability and agricultural productivity, urging the central government to prioritize the scheme through the Ministry of Jalshakti.
