Saji Cherian Biography

Saji Cherian was born on 28 May 1965 in Alappuzha district, Kerala. He started his educational journey at Bishop Moore College, located in Mavelikkara, and at Kerala Law Academy Law College situated in Thiruvananthapuram, before he entered the political field through his involvement with student and youth organizations, which included the Students’ Federation of India and the Democratic Youth Federation of India while he later became an organizational leader for the CPI(M) party.

Before he became a legislator, Cherian made his first electoral attempt when he ran for office in Chengannur during the 2006 election, but lost the election. He won the 2018 by-election from the same constituency, which marked his entry into the Kerala Legislative Assembly, and he achieved reelection in 2021, which helped him establish his political foundation.

He received his appointment as Minister for Fisheries, Culture, and Youth Affairs in May 2021 to serve in the Second Pinarayi Vijayan ministry. In July 2022, he resigned from the cabinet after controversy over remarks perceived as derogatory toward the Constitution, a decision that led to legal challenges and later reinstatement as minister in January 2023 after court clearance.

Cherian maintained his role as Chengannur MLA while serving as Minister for Fisheries, Culture, and Youth Affairs during the years 2024 and 2025, which included his work in state governance and legislative activities as well as public projects that focused on his ministerial duties. He managed the execution of existing policies and the execution of development projects across all areas that his ministries handled.

He became the Minister for Fisheries, Culture, and Youth Affairs in the Second Pinarayi Vijayan government when he assumed office in 2021. He resigned in 2022 and was subsequently reinstated as minister in 2023, continuing his service in the cabinet and legislative assembly.

He rose through the ranks and went on to become the district president of Democratic Youth Federation of India, the youth wing of CPI(M). He represented Mulakuzha division in the district panchayat in 1995 and became chairman of the development standing committee in the local body.
