Rameswar Teli was born on 14 August 1970 in Duliajan, Assam. He comes from a modest family background and rose through grassroots politics, becoming associated with organisations representing tea-garden communities in Upper Assam. His early public life helped him build a strong support base among labour and rural voters.
He entered electoral politics with the BJP and emerged as an influential face in Assam’s tea belt. He first won the Duliajan Assembly seat in 2001 and retained it in 2006. His victories established him as a dependable BJP organiser in Upper Assam.
In 2014, he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Dibrugarh after defeating veteran Congress leader Paban Singh Ghatowar. He retained the seat in 2019 with a larger margin and was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers as Minister of State. He later handled Petroleum and Natural Gas, Labour and Employment portfolios.
After completing his Lok Sabha tenure, he entered the Rajya Sabha from Assam in 2024. In 2026, he returned to contest the Assam Assembly election from Duliajan and won, marking another phase in his political career.
On 12 May 2026, Rameswar Teli was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the Assam government, marking his return to executive office in state politics. A veteran BJP leader, he previously served as Minister of State in the Union government and built his reputation as a key organisational and electoral figure in Upper Assam. His career includes legislative and parliamentary experience, particularly from the Dibrugarh region, where he developed a strong support base.
As of 2026, he remains regarded as one of the BJP’s senior OBC faces in Assam.
