P. K. Basheer was born on 25 September 1959 in Edavanna, Malappuram district, Kerala. He became active in politics through youth and organisational activities associated with the Indian Union Muslim League and gradually emerged as a recognised political figure in the Malabar region. His early political involvement focused on grassroots mobilisation, public outreach, and constituency-level organisational work.
In 1990, he expanded his role within IUML organisational politics through constituency activities and youth mobilisation programmes in Malappuram district. Over the years, he became known for maintaining strong public contact and actively participating in welfare and development initiatives across the Ernad region.
In 2006, P. K. Basheer was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Ernad constituency for the first time. His victory established him as one of the key IUML leaders in Malappuram district. He later retained the constituency in multiple Assembly elections, strengthening his political influence within the United Democratic Front.
Between 2011 and 2025, he remained actively involved in Assembly debates, constituency development activities, and IUML organisational affairs. His political work focused on infrastructure development, education, welfare initiatives, and public issues affecting Ernad and the surrounding areas.
In the 2026 Kerala Assembly election, P. K. Basheer won the Ernad constituency with 98,547 votes, securing victory by a margin of 41,289 votes and extending his long legislative career.
On 18 May 2026, P. K. Basheer was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister in the new Kerala government following the UDF’s return to power.
