E. T. Mohammed Basheer was born on 1 July 1946, at Malappuram district of Kerala. He is currently a Member of India's Parliament. He was elected to Lok Sabha from the Ponnani constituency, Kerala. He is a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment, and a member of the parliamentary consultative committee. Also he was the State Party Secretary of the Indian National Congress Party (IUML). He completed his S.S.L.C. from Chaliyam Impichi High School. Basheer married Rukkiya Basheer and the couple has three sons and one daughter. He began his political career by becoming an active member of the Muslim Students Federation (MSF). He later actively engaged in Trade Union field and became State Secretary of S.T.U., worked as President of various trade unions affiliated to Swathanthra Thozhilali Union (S.T.U).
