P. K. Kunhalikutty was born on 1 June 1951 in Oorakam in present-day Kerala. He entered politics through student movements, particularly the Muslim Students Federation, the student wing of the IUML.
He began his political career early and became Chairman of Malappuram Municipality in 1980 at the age of 29, marking his rise within the Indian Union Muslim League.
He was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1982 and went on to be elected multiple times (eight terms between 1982 and 2021) from constituencies including Malappuram, Kuttippuram, and Vengara.
He has served as Minister for Industries and other portfolios in various Kerala governments led by K. Karunakaran, A. K. Antony, and Oommen Chandy, establishing his role in state governance.
He also served as a Member of Parliament from Malappuram (2017–2021) and currently holds key organisational roles within the IUML, including National General Secretary.
As of Mar 2026, P. K. Kunhalikutty is contesting the upcoming Kerala Assembly election from the Malappuram Assembly constituency, representing the Indian Union Muslim League and continuing his active engagement in state politics and public affairs.
