K. M. Shaji was born on 22 December 1971 in Kaniyambetta, Kerala. He began his public life through student leadership roles and later moved into local governance and youth politics.
He served as President of the Muslim Youth League (Kerala) and became an important organisational leader within the Indian Union Muslim League, holding positions such as secretariat member and parliamentary party treasurer.
He entered legislative politics by winning the Kerala Assembly election from Azhikode constituency in 2011 and was re-elected in 2016, establishing himself as a key IUML leader in Kannur district.

In the 2021 Kerala Assembly election, he contested from Azhikode but lost to CPI(M) candidate K. V. Sumesh, marking a setback in his electoral career.
As of Mar 2026, K. M. Shaji is contesting the upcoming Kerala Assembly election from the Vengara Assembly constituency, representing the Indian Union Muslim League and continuing his active engagement in state politics and public affairs.
