Rao Inderjit Singh Biography

Rao Inderjit Singh, a former Congress heavyweight, is a five-time Member of Parliament and a four-time Member of the Legislative Assembly. He switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

He is a descendant of Rao Tula Ram, the 19th-century king of the Ahirwal region, which includes Rewari, Mahendragarh, Gurugram, and parts of Bhiwani, Dadri, Nuh, and Jhajjar in Haryana, as well as Alwar in Rajasthan. Born to Rao Birender Singh and Chandra Prabha in Rewari (Haryana) on 11 February 1950, his father served as Haryana’s second Chief Minister in 1967.

At the age of 26, Inderjit Singh made his Assembly debut from Jatusana in Rewari on the ticket of the Vishal Haryana Party, founded by his father Birender Singh. This party merged with the Congress in 1978.

While in the Congress, Inderjit Singh accused the then Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, of favouring his constituency, Rohtak, over the rest of Haryana.

Belonging to the Yadav community, Inderjit Singh has sought to mobilise support based on his Ahir identity. He and his daughter, Aarti Rao, have strongly supported the demand for an Ahir regiment in the army, a longstanding demand of the community in South Haryana's Ahirwal region, which includes Gurugram, Rewari, and Mahendragarh. The Yaduvanshi Ahir community has a significant presence in this region.

Currently, Inderjit Singh is the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Planning and Statistics and Programme Implementation, as well as the Minister of State for Corporate Affairs in Narendra Modi's ministry. In the previous Congress-led UPA government, Singh served as the Minister of State for External Affairs and later as the Minister of State for Defence.

Beyond politics, Inderjit Singh has a keen interest in social service and sports.

He is the President of the Bhartiya Yadav Maha Sabha (Regd.) and focuses on providing educational facilities in rural areas. He enjoys angling, exploring nature, reading, golf, swimming, tennis, and shooting.

Inderjit Singh was a member of the Indian Shooting Team from 1990 to 2003. He was the national champion in the skeet discipline for three consecutive years, won a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Shooting Championship, and secured three gold medals in the SAF Games.

He is a member of several prestigious clubs, including the Delhi Gymkhana Club, India International Centre, Delhi Golf Club, Kasauli Club, and Chandigarh Golf Club.

On a personal note, Inderjit married Manita Singh, and they have two daughters. His net worth is Rs 1,21,54,22,868.
