Dr. Dinesh Sharma

Dr. Dinesh Sharma, a prominent figure in Indian politics, holds several significant positions within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Born on January 12, 1964, in Lucknow, he has established himself as a key figure in both state and national politics.

Sharma's political journey began with his involvement in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His early association with the Sangh laid the foundation for his future endeavors in politics.

His familial ties further strengthened his ideological roots, as the renowned Sangh ideologue, Deendayal Upadhyaya, frequently visited Sharma's paternal home on Aishbagh road in Lucknow, owing to his close relationship with Sharma's father.

Transitioning into active politics, Sharma served as the mayor of Lucknow twice, first elected to the office in November 2006 and winning re-election in July 2012. His tenure as mayor showcased his administrative capabilities and earned him recognition within the party.

Following his successful stints as mayor, Sharma ascended to higher positions within the BJP. He was appointed as the state President of the BJP's Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (Youth Wing) and later served as the National Vice-President of the party in 2014.

Recognised for his leadership qualities, Sharma was handpicked by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to head the Atal Innovation Mission, reflecting his commitment to fostering innovation and development.

In March 2017, Sharma's political trajectory reached new heights when he was appointed as one of the two Deputy Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh.

Outside of politics, Sharma has made significant contributions to academia. He is a respected professor in the commerce department at the University of Lucknow, where he has been instrumental in guiding roughly two dozen Ph.D. students since joining in 1992.

Additionally, he holds a lifetime membership in the World Association for Vedic Studies, showcasing his dedication to scholarly pursuits alongside his political career.

Following the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Sharma did not continue in the state cabinet but remained active within the Bharatiya Janata Party, contributing to organisational and policy-related work. In September 2023, he was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh, marking his entry into national parliamentary politics. Since then, he has focused on legislative responsibilities in the Upper House while continuing his engagement with party affairs.

As of 2026, Sharma serves as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament and remains an influential BJP leader.
