Jayant Sinha

Jayant Sinha serves as the Member of Parliament from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Born on April 21, 1963, in Giridih, Jharkhand, he is the son of the bureaucrat and seasoned politician Yashwant Sinha and Nilima Sinha.

Jayant Sinha has been an integral figure in Indian politics and policy-making since the 1990s. During his father's tenure as Finance Minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government (1998-2002), Sinha actively participated in shaping key policies, providing valuable insights that led to the implementation of initiatives such as the mortgage interest tax deduction and the introduction of the Saral form to simplify income tax filing and enhance tax compliance.

In May 2014, Sinha secured a resounding victory in the elections, winning his parliamentary seat by an impressive margin of approximately 1,60,000 votes. Representing a constituency of 2.5 million people, he has remained dedicated to addressing the needs and concerns of his constituents. The BJP has entrusted Sinha with significant responsibilities within the parliamentary framework.

He has been nominated to serve on key Parliamentary Committees, including the Public Accounts Committee and the Standing Committee on Finance. Additionally, he has been selected by the Speaker of India's Parliament to represent the Asia-Pacific Group on the Inter-Parliamentary Union's Sub Committee on Sustainable Development, Finance, and Trade. Before stepping into the political arena, Sinha served as a Partner at Omidyar Network (ON), a renowned impact investment firm founded by Pam and Pierre Omidyar, the creator of eBay. During his tenure, Sinha played a pivotal role in shaping ON's investment strategy and operations in India, as well as globally, as a member of its five-member Executive Committee. With approximately $750 million in deployed capital, ON has been instrumental in pioneering investments in impactful organizations worldwide, including Wikipedia, Kiva, and d.light.

Sinha's professional journey also includes significant stints at Courage Capital Management and McKinsey & Company. At Courage Capital, he served as Managing Director, overseeing global technology investments and India-related ventures for a billion-dollar special situations hedge fund.

Before this, Sinha spent twelve years at McKinsey & Company, where he rose to the position of Partner in both the Boston and Delhi offices. At McKinsey, he co-led the global Software & IT Services Practice, showcasing his deep understanding of the IT/BPO and Telecom sectors.

Furthermore, Sinha's influence extends beyond the corporate realm, as evidenced by his advisory roles for various governmental bodies in India. He has provided strategic counsel to the Indian government on entrepreneurship and has served on Advisory Committees for the Finance and Telecom Ministries, as well as the Planning Commission.

Additionally, Sinha's expertise has earned him recognition as a thought leader, with his insights featured in esteemed publications such as The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, and Harvard Business Review.

Throughout his career, Sinha has demonstrated a commitment to fostering impactful change, evident through his founding chairmanship of the India Impact Investors Council and his contributions to influential reports like the Nasscom-McKinsey reports.

In addition to his professional life, he is actively involved in tennis, writing, and social work. He is a leading donor to India's top NGOs as the MD of Omidyar Network Advisors India and serves as a patron of Johar Health Management and Atal Sanskritik Manch. He is a member of the Delhi Gymkhana Club and the Delhi Golf Club.
