Raj Kumar Singh
Raj Kumar Singh is an Indian Politician from Bihar and a senior BJP leader. Since 2014, he has been representing the Arrah constituency in the Lok Sabha. Mr. Singh was formerly an IAS officer. In 2013, he made his political debut and became the Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, subsequently promoted to Cabinet rank in 2021.

His work period has been identified with the energy reforms, electrification of villages, and accelerated development in India's renewable sector.

He contested the Bihar Assembly Election in November 2025 from the Matihani constituency as a JD(U) candidate but did not win.

Raj Kumar Singh Biography

Raj Kumar Singh was born in Supaul district, Bihar, on 20 December 1952. After studying at St. Stephen's College, Delhi, he studied law at Magadh University and later joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1975. Singh, over the span of his career, rose to the top of the administrative hierarchy and held various significant positions.

He has been on the administrative side of things in many capacities as an IAS officer. One of his most important positions was when he was the Home Secretary of India (2011-2013), during which time he dealt with issues related to the country's internal security, anti-terrorism efforts, and the implementation of policy in a difficult time period. He was very much known for his efficiency and firmness that which left his mark as a powerful and influential administrator at both the state and Central levels through his bureaucratic career.

In 2013, Raj Kumar Singh decided to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), signaling the beginning of his political career. He got himself elected to the Lok Sabha from Arrah in 2014 and again in 2019. First, he was made Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and New & Renewable Energy, and then he was promoted to Cabinet rank in July 2021, demonstrating the increase in his position in the party.

As a Power Minister and Renewable Energy, Singh, who spearheaded the reforms in the power sector that made the country power surplus, paved the way for extensive rural electrification and unbundling of the distribution sector. Moreover, the time of his stewardship recorded the lowest tariffs for solar and wind, and also the pivotal growth of India's renewable energy. He has been known as a person who has brought reforms in India and has been instrumental in India emerging as a strong global player in clean energy, which has, in turn, helped the country's energy stability.

In November 2025, Raj Kumar Singh ran for the Matihani Assembly seat on a Janata Dal (United) ticket but lost by 5,290 votes.

After doing his graduation in English Literature from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi in 1971, he went on to get a law degree (LL.B.) from Magadh University in 1974.
