MTB Nagaraj was born into a modest family in the rural heartlands of Karnataka, where his early life was shaped by the challenges typical of a rural upbringing in India. Growing up amidst the simplicity of rural life, he faced the realities of limited resources and opportunities, which instilled in him a strong sense of resilience and determination.

Nagaraj pursued his education in local schools and colleges, where he demonstrated a keen interest in social issues from a young age. His formative years were characterised by an awareness of the struggles faced by his community, prompting him to seek solutions to these pressing challenges.

His entry into politics was a natural progression, beginning as a member of local panchayats. Here, he honed his skills in governance and public administration, gaining invaluable experience at the grassroots level. His dedication and commitment to community welfare quickly caught the attention of senior political leaders, who recognised his potential as a leader deeply attuned to rural issues.

A pivotal moment in Nagaraj's political journey came when he joined the Indian National Congress (INC), one of the major political parties in India. This decision was driven by his belief in the party’s ideology and its commitment to social justice, secularism, and inclusive growth. As a member of Congress, he began to rise through the ranks, earning a reputation as a hardworking and dedicated politician.

Nagaraj’s ascent in Karnataka politics was marked by his success in legislative elections. He secured his first major electoral victory as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Hoskote constituency, a seat he would go on to represent multiple times. His tenure as an MLA allowed him to champion various developmental initiatives, solidifying his status as a prominent political figure in the region.

Eventually, Nagaraj's success as an MLA led to his appointment as a minister in the Karnataka state government. Over the years, he held various portfolios, including Housing, Municipal Administration, and Large and Medium Industries. In these roles, he played a crucial part in implementing policies aimed at improving infrastructure, boosting industrial growth, and addressing housing issues in the state, demonstrating his commitment to enhancing the lives of his constituents.

However, Nagaraj's political career has not been without challenges and controversies. A significant turning point occurred in 2019 when he defected from the Indian National Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move was part of a larger political realignment in Karnataka, which ultimately led to the collapse of the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition government and the formation of a BJP-led government in the state. His defection was met with widespread criticism from former colleagues in Congress, who accused him of betraying the party’s trust.

As a member of the BJP, Nagaraj holds considerable influence within the party and is regarded as a key player in the state's political landscape. His ability to navigate the complexities of Karnataka's political arena continues to define his career.

In the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, Nagaraj contested from Hosakote on a BJP ticket but was defeated, marking a setback in his electoral career. As of 2025–2026, he remains active in state politics without holding an elected legislative office.

On a personal note, Nagaraj is married and has children, although he has largely kept his family out of the public eye. Despite his demanding political career, he is said to value family time and is known to be a devoted husband and father, balancing his public responsibilities with his private life.
