Born on 5 June 1967, in Tilakpur, Chanan, Lakhisarai, Bihar, Vijay Kumar Sinha's journey in public life began with a strong educational foundation and early involvement in student politics. He completed a Diploma in Civil Engineering in 1989 from Government Polytechnic, Barauni, Begusarai. During his student days, he was an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, which shaped his ideological leanings and prepared him for a career in politics.
Sinha's political career saw him rise through the ranks of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Lakhisarai constituency in 2005, and has since been re-elected consecutively in 2010, 2015, and 2020.
He served as the Minister of Labour Resources in the Government of Bihar from 29 July 2017, to 16 November 2020. A significant milestone in his career was his election as the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly on 25 November 2020, a position he held until 24 August 2022. He resigned from the Speakership following a no-confidence motion. Subsequently, he assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 24 August 2022, to 28 January 2024.
On 28 January 2024, Vijay Kumar Sinha was appointed as one of the Deputy Chief Ministers of Bihar, alongside Samrat Choudhary, under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. In this capacity, he has also held portfolios such as Minister of Road Construction, Minister of Art, Culture & Youth Affairs, and Minister of Mining & Geology (from January 28, 2024 to February 26, 2025), and is currently serving as the Minister of Agriculture (assumed office February 26, 2025). Sinha belongs to the influential Bhumihar community and is recognized as an experienced leader within the BJP. He has been noted for his assertive demeanor, particularly during his tenure as Speaker, where he introduced initiatives like '5 Sankalp' aimed at promoting harmony and civic values.
Regarding his financial standing, as per disclosures from 2024, Vijay Kumar Sinha owns immovable assets worth ₹2,42,00,000, while his wife holds immovable assets valued at ₹3,32,00,000. He also possesses a revolver worth ₹77,181. Notably, there are also criminal charges registered against him, including one related to cheating (IPC Section 420) and one related to criminal breach of trust (IPC Section 406).
Vijay Kumar Sinha secured the Lakhisarai seat in November 2025 by getting 122,408 votes, exceeding the Congress candidate Amaresh Kumar's votes by 24,940, thus making his fourth consecutive term in this area.
On 20 November 2025, Vijay Kumar Sinha, veteran BJP leader and MLA from Lakhisarai, took oath as Deputy Chief Minister for a second term in the newly formed NDA government.
