S.M. Nasar

S. M. Nasar was born on 5 April 1959 in Tamil Nadu. He became involved in public life through local political engagement and community-oriented activities, gradually building a reputation for organisational work within the Dravidian political framework. His early years in politics were shaped by constituency-level interaction and party discipline.

He formally aligned himself with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and worked through the party’s grassroots structure in the Chennai-suburban region. Over the years, he held various organisational responsibilities, which strengthened his role as a dependable party functionary and constituency leader.

S. M. Nasar entered legislative politics in 2016, when he was elected as a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Avadi Assembly constituency. His victory marked the beginning of his tenure as a legislator, representing one of the rapidly urbanising constituencies near Chennai.

He successfully retained the Avadi seat in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, reflecting sustained public support and organisational strength. His re-election coincided with the DMK’s return to power in the state.

Following the formation of the DMK government in 2021, S. M. Nasar was inducted into the Tamil Nadu Council of Ministers as the Minister for Minorities Welfare and Non-Resident Tamils Welfare. In this role, he assumed responsibility for welfare programmes targeting minority communities and initiatives related to the Tamil diaspora.

As a cabinet minister, he has been involved in policy implementation, department administration, and coordination with various government agencies to strengthen welfare delivery mechanisms. His portfolio places him at the intersection of social welfare and diaspora engagement.

As of 2026, S. M. Nasar continues to serve as MLA from Avadi and as a cabinet minister in the Tamil Nadu government, combining legislative representation with executive responsibility.
