Following the footprint of his father, Pratap Singh Bajwa also joined Congress as a student leader, gradually rose through the ranks and got elected as an MLA in Punjab assembly and also represented Gurudaspur constituency in the Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014.

Pratap Singh Bajwa completed his schooling from Punjab Public School, Nabha and later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Panjab University, Chandigarh. He started his career in politics as a student leader in 1976. Right from a volunteer, he rose to the President of State Congress.
