Mitali Roy hails from Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, and entered politics with the All India Trinamool Congress. She contested the 2016 West Bengal Assembly election from Dhupguri and won, defeating the incumbent CPI(M) candidate Mamata Roy by a significant margin.
Roy’s 2016 victory marked her first term as an MLA. During her tenure, she was involved in local development initiatives and constituency-level activities, representing her area in the state legislature.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, she contested again from Dhupguri but lost to the BJP’s Bishnu Pada Roy, who later passed away in 2023, triggering a bypoll.
Just two days before the Dhupguri bypoll in September 2023, Mitali Roy left the Trinamool Congress and joined the BJP, citing organisational and work-related reasons and the desire to bring development to her constituency.
As of 2026, Roy remains engaged in West Bengal politics with the BJP, building her organisational presence and public outreach.
