A former additional deputy inspector general of police of West Bengal, Choudhury Mohan Jatua, entered the political fray when he contested and won the assembly elections from Mandirbazar constituency on a Trinamool Congress ticket in 2001. However, he lost the 2006 election in the same constituency to CPM's Dr. Tapati Saha. Undeterred by the loss he then went onto contest and win 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Mathurapur constituency in West Bengal. He was then elevated as Union Minister of State, Information and Broadcasting in the Manmohan Singh government in 2009-2012. He was re-elected for his second term as the MP of the Mathurapur constituency in 2014.
