Kirti Azad, formally Kirtivardhan Bhagwat Jha Azad, is an Indian politician and former international cricketer. He represented India in the 1983 Cricket World Cup-winning team and later entered public life through electoral politics.

Over the years, he has represented constituencies in Bihar and West Bengal in the Lok Sabha.

As of 2026, he serves as the Member of Parliament from Bardhaman–Durgapur Lok Sabha constituency representing the All India Trinamool Congress.

Kirti Azad Biography

Kirti Azad was born on 2 January 1959 in Purnea, Bihar. He is the son of Bhagwat Jha Azad, who served as Chief Minister of Bihar. Kirti Azad completed his education at Delhi University, where he studied commerce before pursuing a cricket career.

Azad gained national recognition as a member of the Indian national cricket team, particularly as part of the squad that won the 1983 Cricket World Cup, one of the most significant achievements in Indian cricket history. After retiring from professional cricket, he gradually transitioned into public life and political activities.

He entered electoral politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party and was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Darbhanga Lok Sabha constituency in 1999. Over the following years, he became known for his parliamentary participation and political engagement in Bihar politics.

Azad returned to Parliament in 2014, again winning the Darbhanga seat as a BJP candidate. However, internal party developments later led to his departure from the BJP in 2015, after which he joined the Indian National Congress in 2019 and continued his political career at the national level.

In 2021, he joined the All India Trinamool Congress and contested the 2022 Indian general election by-poll from the Bardhaman–Durgapur constituency in West Bengal, securing victory and returning to the Lok Sabha.

As of 2026, Kirti Azad continues to serve as Member of Parliament from Bardhaman-Durgapur representing the Trinamool Congress.
