For the next decade, he climbed up the PDP totem Pole and galvanized his stature as a prominent political leader in Kashmir. In 2014 he defeated National Conference stalwart Farooq Abdullah from the Srinagar-Budgam Lok Sabha constituency and was elected to 16th Lok Sabha. In September 2016, Hamid Karra resigned from the party and joined INC after PDP decided to enter into an alliance with the BJP.
