Kamal Nath was born on November 18, 1946, in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He pursued his education at The Doon School and later graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. He entered politics at a young age and became closely associated with senior Congress leadership, particularly during the early phase of his career.
He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1980 from the Chhindwara constituency, marking the beginning of a long and influential parliamentary career. Over the years, he was re-elected multiple times, establishing himself as a dominant political figure in the region.
During his tenure in national politics, he held several important ministerial portfolios in different Congress-led governments. He served as Minister of Environment and Forests, Textile Minister, and later as Minister of Commerce and Industry, where he played a key role in India’s trade negotiations, including involvement in WTO discussions. He also served as Minister of Urban Development.
In 2018, he was appointed Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh after the Congress formed the government in the state. His tenure, however, was short-lived, as he resigned in March 2020 following a political crisis that led to the fall of the government.
Apart from his ministerial and executive roles, he has been an influential strategist within the Congress party, playing a key role in organisational decisions and election campaigns. His long political career spans both central and state-level governance.
As of 2026, he continues to be active in national and state politics, maintaining his influence while actively engaging in party leadership, political strategy, policymaking discussions, and public affairs.
