Kumbakudi Sudhakaran, a descendant of a Nadal Thiyya family in the Malabar region, was born on 7 June 1948 in Kannur, Kerala, to V. Ramunni and K. Madhavi. After graduating from Government Brennen College, Thalassery, he earned a Master of Arts (M.A.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), and Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History as his educational qualifications.
The late 1970s were the beginning of Sudhakaran’s political career, marking the start of the path that led him to collaborate with the Janata Party and then join the Indian National Congress. In 1996, he won a seat in the Kerala Legislative Assembly, representing the Kannur constituency until the year 2009. It was during this time that he took on the role of Minister for Forest and Sports in the Kerala government from 2001 to 2004 under Chief Minister A. K. Antony.
Sudhakaran made a move to national politics and, through the first election of an MP (Lok Sabha) from Kannur in 2009, he was victorious over the CPI(M) candidate. He was again in the Lok Sabha in 2019, winning the contest against incumbent rivals with the backing of a very strong margin, and he continued to hold the chair even during the general elections of 2024.
He was made President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) in June 2021 as a part of a strategy by the Congress high command to refresh the party’s image in the state, though he was replaced in May 2025 as part of organisational changes.
Sudhakaran is still an MP for Kannur in 2025, taking part in parliamentary committees like Rural Development and Welfare of the Other Backward Classes, and still being one of the most influential people in Kerala Congress politics.
