Dr. Sharan Prakash Rudrappa Patil was born on 11 September 1962 in Kalaburagi district, Karnataka. He completed his MBBS degree and pursued a medical career before entering active politics. He is the son of former Karnataka Chief Minister Dharam Singh, one of the state's most prominent Congress leaders.
Patil entered public life through the Indian National Congress and gradually established himself as a leading political figure in the Kalyana Karnataka region. His background in medicine influenced his long-standing interest in healthcare, medical education, and public welfare initiatives.
Over the years, he built a strong electoral base in Sedam and emerged as one of the Congress party's most prominent leaders in Kalaburagi district. His administrative experience and legislative record led to his inclusion in several state governments, where he handled important portfolios connected to education, skill development, and healthcare.
During previous Congress governments, Patil served as Minister for Medical Education and played a significant role in the expansion of medical colleges and healthcare infrastructure across Karnataka. His tenure was marked by efforts to strengthen professional education and improve access to medical training in the state.
Following the Congress victory in 2023, he was inducted into the Karnataka Cabinet and entrusted with the Medical Education and Skill Development portfolio.
On 3 June 2026, he took oath as a Cabinet Minister in the D. K. Shivakumar-led government. Following the allocation of portfolios, he retained charge of the Medical Education Department, continuing his role among the senior leaders of the state administration.
