Dr. Govi Chezhiaan

Dr. Govi Chezhiaan was born on 13 May 1966 in Tamil Nadu. He pursued higher education extensively and earned a doctoral degree, which shaped his long-standing association with academic and intellectual circles. His academic background played a key role in his later engagement with education-focused public initiatives.

He became actively involved in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) through grassroots political work and party organisation. Over the years, he built a reputation within the party for discipline, policy-oriented thinking, and consistent engagement with public issues, particularly those linked to education and social development.

Dr. Chezhiaan entered legislative politics in 2016, when he was elected as a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Thiruvidaimarudur Assembly constituency. His victory marked his transition from party and academic engagement to formal legislative responsibility.

He was re-elected in 2021, retaining the confidence of voters in Thiruvidaimarudur. Following the DMK’s return to power the same year, his seniority and academic credentials led to his inclusion in the state’s executive leadership.

In 2023, Dr. Govi Chezhiaan was entrusted with the Higher Education portfolio in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet. As minister, he assumed responsibility for universities, government, and aided colleges, technical institutions, and policy initiatives aimed at improving access, infrastructure, and academic standards.

As of 2026, he continues to serve as MLA from Thiruvidaimarudur and as a cabinet minister, combining legislative experience with executive oversight in one of the state’s most critical social sectors.
