Chandana Bauri

Chandana Bauri hails from Bankura district in West Bengal and comes from an economically underprivileged background. Before entering politics, she was primarily engaged in household responsibilities and lived in a modest rural setting, which later became a defining aspect of her public identity as a grassroots leader.

Her political journey began at the grassroots level when she became associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party during local organisational activities around the panchayat elections. Through consistent involvement in party work and community-level engagement, she gradually gained recognition within the party’s district structure.

In 2021, she was fielded by the BJP from the Saltora (SC) constituency in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Despite limited financial resources and being relatively unknown at the state level, she ran a strong campaign and secured a victory against the Trinamool Congress candidate, marking a significant breakthrough in her political career.

Her victory attracted widespread national attention as she was among the candidates with the lowest declared assets in the election. This aspect of her profile made her a symbol of grassroots representation and highlighted the socio-economic diversity among elected representatives in Indian politics.

Following her election, she has remained active as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, participating in political activities and constituency-level engagement. In the lead-up to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, she has been fielded again from the Saltora constituency, reflecting the party’s continued trust in her candidature and grassroots connect.
