Champai Soren is a seasoned politician and was the 7th Chief Minister of Jharkhand. Currently, he represents the Seraikella Assembly constituency in the state.

Before assuming the role of Chief Minister, Champai Soren served as the Cabinet Minister responsible for Transport, Scheduled Tribes, and Scheduled Caste & Backward Class Welfare in the cabinet under Chief Minister Hemant Soren of Jharkhand.

Champai Soren Biography

Champai Soren, a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, hails from a humble background. He was born to Simal Soren, a farmer residing in the Jilinggoda village in the Saraikela-Kharsawan district. In his formative years, Champai worked alongside his father on their family farms. Despite the challenges, he pursued his education up to the 10th grade at a government school.

An ardent follower of Birsa Munda, Chamapi Soren was influenced by Shibu Soren, the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and later joined the political outfit of his political idol.

He rose through the ranks in the party and became an MLA in 2005 and ever since he has won all four MLA elections he fought. He has also worked as a cabinet minister in the state government led by Hemant Soren.

He was designated chief minister following the resignation of the incumbent CM, Hemant Soren, who stepped down amid an ongoing investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into a land scam.

He resigned and paved the way for Hemant Soren’s return. This development comes just days after Hemant Soren was released on bail on June 28.

On 4th September 2024, he resigned from the JMM and joined the Bharatiya Janta Party.

2024: Champai Soren assumed the role of Jharkhand's Chief Minister on 2 February, succeeding Hemant Soren, who resigned amidst an ED investigation into a land scam. Hemant Soren was later granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court on 28 June. On 6 July, Champai Soren stepped down as Chief Minister to pave the way for Hemant Soren's return. In a significant political move, Champai Soren resigned from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and joined the BJP on 4 September. He contested the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly election from the Seraikela constituency, a seat he has held since 1991. Running as a BJP candidate for the first time, he secured a decisive victory with a margin of over 20,000 votes.
2019: Champai Soren registered the straight 4th victory from Seraikella constituency as a member of JMM and served as the minister of transport, schedule tribe and schedule cast welfare under the chief minister Hemant Soren.
2014: He got one more stint in the Jharkhand assembly as an MLA of the JMM from Seraikella.
