Arvinder Singh Lovely was born and raised in Delhi to Balwinder Singh, Lovely pursued his graduation in Political Science from SGTB Khalsa College of Delhi University. Actively engaged in student politics during his college years, he ascended to roles of leadership, becoming the general secretary of the Delhi Youth Congress in 1990 and subsequently serving as the General Secretary of the National Student’s Union of India (NSUI) from 1992 to 1996.
He is a prominent figure in the Delhi unit of the Congress party, commenced his political journey by becoming the youngest MLA elected to the Delhi Assembly in 1998, representing the Gandhi Nagar constituency. His tenure lasted until 2015, during which he undertook significant responsibilities, including serving in key ministerial roles such as Urban Development & Revenue, Education, and Transport in successive Sheila Dixit-led governments in Delhi.
As the education minister of Delhi, he served the longest tenure and introduced various initiatives to enhance the education system in the Union Territory. Notably, he introduced the EWS (Economically Weaker Section) quota and the Laadli scheme, which aimed to support underprivileged individuals in gaining access to quality education.
As Transport Minister, Lovely oversaw the replacement of Blue Line buses with Low Floor buses, effectively doubling the number of buses and greatly enhancing road safety in Delhi. Within a short span of six months, he successfully transitioned the entire Delhi bus fleet to CNG, significantly reducing emissions and promoting environmental sustainability.
Having also served as the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, Lovely contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the East Delhi constituency, contending against Gautam Gambhir of the BJP and Atishi of the AAP. Despite his efforts, he faced defeat, losing to Gambhir by a significant margin of 3,92,000 votes.
With an allegiance spanning nearly three decades, Lovely's dedication to the Congress was briefly interrupted in 2017 when he joined the BJP in April of that year. However, he swiftly returned to the Congress fold after a brief stint, citing ideological disparities with the BJP.
In the 2020 Delhi election, Lovely contested from his traditional stronghold of the Gandhi Nagar constituency, facing off against Naveen Choudhary (Deepu) of the BJP and the incumbent AAP MLA Anil Bajpai.
He was appointed as the new president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee by the Congress party in August last year.
In preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party appointed him as the president of the state Congress unit. However, on 28th March 2024, he tendered his resignation from the post of the Delhi Congress president. On May 4, he joined the ruling BJP.
On a personal front, Lovely is married to Gurveen Kaur and is a proud father of two sons. His net worth is estimated at Rs 5,04,52,066.
