Dr. L Murugan

Dr. L. Murugan is a licensed attorney who practiced law before becoming involved in active politics. His legal background and participation in social justice causes living helped to characterize his early public life and political viewpoints.

He made his way up the ranks of the BJP through his active role in the organization and was chosen as the leader of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit in 2020. During this time, he worked to make the party bigger, create good leaders, and reach out to people on the ground in a state that is politically difficult for the BJP.

In 2021, Dr. Murugan took part in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, thus gaining a state-wide profile notwithstanding the loss. His leadership during that time was considered to be very important for the party’s organizational structure reinforcement.

He got elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2021, which was his entry to the Upper House of Parliament. Very soon after, he was appointed a member of the Union Cabinet, which was an indication of the party’s prioritization of the southern states’ representation.

As a Minister of State with the Union Cabinet, he has worked through various sectors, resulting in policy initiatives, sector development, and government outreach programs. He keeps on being a part of the administration while also being very active in organizing.

In 2025, Dr. L. Murugan holds the position of Union Minister of State and Rajya Sabha MP, thus being the only BJP leader from Tamil Nadu who is still influential at the center.
