Bajrang Punia Biography

Bajrang Punia grew up in Khudan village in Jhajjar district, Haryana. The children in his village enjoyed free-hand sports such as kabaddi and wrestling. The local wrestling area was a popular spot.

Bajrang began wrestling at the age of seven, inspired and supported by his father, Balwan Singh who was also a wrestler.

His family could not afford sports like cricket or badminton, which required costly equipment. Due to financial constraints, Bajrang had to focus on sports that didn’t require much money.

He started skipping school to attend wrestling practice and, in 2008, moved to Chattarsal Stadium to train under Ramphal Mann.

In 2015, Bajrang’s family relocated to Sonepat so he could train at a regional centre of the Sports Authority of India. At 14, Bajrang began training at the local 'akhada' and soon met Yogeshwar Dutt, an Olympic medallist, who became his mentor and sparring partner.

In 2024, Punia joined the Indian National Congress ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections.
