Ashok Bhattacharya was born in 1949 in Siliguri, West Bengal, and graduated from the University of North Bengal. He began his political career in local governance and was active in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from the late 1960s.
He served as Chairman of Siliguri Municipality from 1987 to 1991 before being elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Siliguri constituency in 1991. Over subsequent elections, he became a prominent CPI(M) legislator in North Bengal.
In 1996, Bhattacharya was appointed Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs in the Left Front government under Chief Minister Jyoti Basu and continued in ministerial office through the tenure of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee until 2011, when the Left Front lost state power.
After his 2011 Assembly defeat, he made a political comeback by winning the Siliguri Assembly seat in 2016 and later served as Mayor of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation from 2015 to 2021. His tenure as mayor and legislator reflects continued influence in local and regional politics.
As of 2026, Ashok Bhattacharya remains a senior CPI(M) leader engaged in regional political work and community issues in Siliguri and North Bengal.
