Born in Calcutta on 17th October 1947, Brinda Karat was the first woman to be appointed to the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the highest decision-making body of the party. Karat joined the CPI in 1971 and since then has fervently backed up Women's empowerment issues in the country.

Karat joined the CPI in 1971 and since then has fervently backed up Women's empowerment issues in the country. She was a member of Rajya Sabha in 2005. She is the sister of Radhika Roy, Journalist and wife of CPIM leader Prakash Karat.

While working for Air India in London, Brinda Karat opposed the mandatory wearing of skirts in the airlines rather than the saree. She ran the campaign and finally won for the rights. The Air India headquarters agreed with her and revoke the rule and gave all women a choice of whether to wear a saree or a skirt as their uniform.
Karat has written a book ‘Survival and Emancipation: Notes from Indian women’s struggles.’
