Born in Calcutta on 17th October 1947, Brinda Karat was the first woman to be appointed to the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the highest decision-making body of the party. Karat joined the CPI in 1971 and since then has fervently backed up Women's empowerment issues in the country. She was a member of Rajya Sabha in 2005. She is the sister of Radhika Roy, Journalist and wife of CPIM leader Prakash Karat.
