Manik Sarkar was born on 22 January 1949 in Radhakishorepur, Udaipur, Tripura, into a middle-class family. He completed his early education in Tripura and later graduated from RMS College under the University of Calcutta, where his involvement in student activism began. During his college years, he joined the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), eventually rising through the organisation due to his disciplined and ideological approach to public life.

Sarkar formally entered mainstream politics when he joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1972. Known for his quiet efficiency, he quickly assumed responsibilities within the party’s state unit and later became a member of the CPI(M) Tripura State Committee. His organisational work earned him recognition, leading to his roles in youth wings and eventually to ministerial responsibilities in the Tripura government.

Manik Sarkar is widely respected for his simple lifestyle: he is known to donate his entire Chief Minister’s salary to the party and receive only a modest allowance in return.
